Vitamin K2 (Menaquinone-7) is a natural source of vitamin K extracted from natto, a traditional japanese food produced through fermentation of soy with Bacillus subtilis Natto. Vitamin K2 is a fat-soluble vitamin that exerts key roles for the organisms, as further confirmed also by EFSA health claims: it contributes to maintenance of normal blood coagulation and to maintenance of normal bones.
Vitamin K is infact necessary for the regular function of enzymes which are involved in coagulation cascade and it’s also a cofactor for osteocalcin, a bones enzyme that takes part to tissue mineralization and to skeletal turnover. Epidemiological studies indicate that low Vitamins K intake is associated to osteoporosis, osteopenia and increased risk of fractures.
Vitamin K2 in form of menaquinone-7, compared to other sources of vitamin K, shows a better bioavailability and a more prolonged absorption profile (see figure below).
