Resveratrol is a naturally occurring phytoalexin produced by plants as a defence against infection by pathogenic microorganisms, such as fungi.
Resveratrol is found in high amounts in grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) and in the dried roots and stems of the plant Polygonum cuspidatum. Resveratrol is a vascular-protecting agent used as a remedy for venous insufficiency, lymphedema and varicose veins and also exerts a cardiovascular protective action through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
