Ruscus aculeatus L. is a common perennial shrub in Mediterranean maquis. Its primary bioactive compounds are steroidal saponins Ruscogenins and Neoruscogenins. Several studies indicate that Ruscus is useful for peripheral microcirculation reducing vascular permeability, exert a vasoconstrictive effect and is helpful in subjects with chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids.
