St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) is a leafy plant native and commonly spread in all Europe, west Asia, Canary Islands and north Africa. The main compounds of pharmacological interest and that characterize the plant and its extracts are hypericin and pseudohypericin (naphthodianthrones).
Health application of this plant is for contrasting mild nervous disturbancies, thanks to anxiolytic, relaxing and anti-depressant effect of the phytocomplex. On contrary there is no observed sedative effect, thus making the use of Hypericum compatible with other daily activities, while a mood-enhancing end tension relieving effect are peculiar of this plant.
St. John’s Wort is a highly safe and tolerable remedy, and interactions with drugs and alcohol are usually not observed.
