Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is a perennial plant characteristic of tropical climates of southern Asia and Indian subcontinent. Curcuminoids that are derived from plant’s rhizome, such as curcumin, and turmerones sesquiterpenoids, are molecules with a characteristics yellow color and typical aroma. These compounds bear a significant antioxidant (through ROS scavenging and inhibition of lipids peroxidation) and anti-inflammatory activities, that can be compared to molecules with known pharmacological activity, like cortisones.
Curcuminoids represent a notable scientific interest molecules, with potential use in several areas of contemporary medicine, beyond the consolidated use deriving from traditional asiatic medicine.
